You will learn: How crude oil is formed and separated into useful fractions, the properties and trend of those different fractions, how to draw and name alkanes, the properties of alkanes, the differences between complete and incomplete combustion of fuels, how pollutants are formed and what problems they cause.

The aims covered in this course are as follows:

1) Define the key terms homo and heterolytic bond fission

2) Draw reaction mechanisms including free radical substitution, electrophilic addition, nucleophilic substitution, Electrophilic substitution and nucleophilic addition.

3) Suggest appropriate mechanism for unfamiliar reactions given appropriate information including a prediction of the product(s)
